Webinar: Using Crisis Intervention and Prevention to Divert Individuals with OUD into Treatment and Supportive Services

In addition to thousands of overdose deaths each year, the opioid epidemic has produced an influx of individuals into states’ criminal legal systems for drug-related crimes. These systems are frequently under-resourced to treat individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD). In response, states are creating pathways to integrate prevention and treatment services along the legal system continuum.

This webinar explores unique approaches used by two states to address these challenges. Panelists discuss Maryland’s efforts to provide cross-systems community intervention strategies through Baltimore’s Tuerk House and Alabama’s approach to divert individuals experiencing SUD or mental health crises away from hospitalization or arrest.

Speakers:

  • Kimberly Boswell, Commissioner, Alabama Department of Mental Health
  • Bernard Gyebi-Foster, Executive Director of the Tuerk House

The National Academy for State Health Policy is providing this webinar with the ongoing support of the Foundation for Opioid Response Efforts (FORE).
