Webinar: BCBS Plans and Civica Rx Partner to Produce Lower-Cost Generic Drugs – Opportunities for States
The nonprofit Civica Rx launched in 2018 to combat drug shortages and price spikes in hospitals. As COVID- 19 brings concern about additional drug shortages, the idea of producing more and less costly generic drugs takes on even more urgency. Recently, the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBS) and 18 of its plans announced a partnership with Civica Rx and its manufacturing partners to produce lower cost generic drugs. The collaboration aims to bring more affordable generics to uncompetitive markets in exchange for aggregated volume and multi-year purchasing commitments.
The goal is also to achieve meaningful savings for individuals and families by early 2022. The partnership is inviting other health plans to join the initiative, opening the door for state public purchasers to participate.
