State employee health plans are often the largest employer purchaser in a state, which gives them unique potential to ensure quality, affordable coverage for many state residents. Administering health plans with such diverse membership can be challenging, but also provides states with the opportunity to leverage the plan’s purchasing power, lowering patients’ out of pocket costs, and freeing up states’ budgets. NASHP is working closely with state employee health plans to explore and develop innovative strategies to reduce costs.
