More than half of all states have enacted some level of legal protections against “surprise” balance medical bills and Congress is now considering a federal approach to address this issue. This session highlights states with enacted surprise billing protections at various stages of implementation, and their approaches to provider payment levels and processes, use of data sources, and transparency requirements. State officials will also discuss their efforts to balance protecting consumers from surprise bills while maintaining access to care.
