For the past 12 years, Thurston has held various positions supporting the State of Utah’s efforts to create state-based solutions for local health care issues, and fighting to prevent the implementation of Obamacare in the state. He has helped lead the effort to reform Utah’s health care system, serving as Health Reform Coordinator for much of that time. He has been actively involved in Utah’s effort to modernize the state’s Medicaid system. In these positions he spent countless hours working with leaders from both the Executive and Legislative branches of state government in the policy development process.
In September 2013, he took over as Director of the Office of Health Care Statistics, the agency responsible for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating information about health care cost and quality for the State of Utah. This change provides sufficient distance from key policymakers to minimize any conflicts of interest in serving in the state legislature. See his full bio here.
