Nearly 1 in 5 children and youth in the U.S. has a special health care need. Children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN) may require specialized care, prescription medications, and medical technology and equipment, and often have unmet health care needs attributable to challenges in accessing high-quality care.
Given concerns around quality and cost, states are working to improve systems of care for this population. NASHP supports states in improving systems of care for CYSHCN and their families, including a focus on standards for high-quality care coordination, Medicaid managed care, integrated care delivery systems, and quality measurement.
