A buy-in program for children allows families with income greater than a state’s Medicaid and state children’s health insurance Program income eligibility levels to purchase coverage through a public plan for their children. A number of states have implemented child buy-in programs.  National children coverage experts provide an explanation of children’s buy-in programs and consider the pros and cons of this coverage strategy.
