Resource Center on Citizenship Documentation Issues

About the Resource Center

The Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 (DRA) required that Medicaid programs verify the citizenship of all applicants and recipients who declare they are U.S. citizens.

The CHIP reauthorization law (CHIPRA), signed into law in February 2009, made some changes to the citizenship documentation requirement, including extending the verification requirement to CHIP programs beginning January 1, 2010.

This page provides resources to help state officials understand the rules and new changes, identify best practices, and document the impact of the requirement. This resource center is funded by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
